Ingredients

Scale

Cheesy Dough Ingredients

  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder (optional)

Filling and Garnish

  • 1/3 cup hot pepper jelly
  • Fresh thyme leaves or chopped parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough: In a large bowl, beat together the softened cream cheese and butter until the mixture is smooth and creamy, creating a rich base for the dough.
  2. Add cheese and dry ingredients: Mix in the shredded sharp cheddar cheese until fully combined. Then, add the all-purpose flour, salt, and optional garlic powder, mixing until a cohesive dough forms.
  3. Chill the dough: Wrap the dough tightly in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to make it easier to handle and to enhance the flavor.
  4. Preheat and prepare baking sheet: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  5. Form dough balls: Roll the chilled dough into 1-inch balls and place them 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheet to allow room for spreading.
  6. Create thumbprints: Using your thumb or the back of a spoon, press an indentation into the center of each dough ball, making space for the jelly filling.
  7. Fill with jelly: Spoon approximately 1/2 teaspoon of hot pepper jelly into each indentation, distributing the spicy-sweet filling evenly.
  8. Bake: Bake the appetizers in the preheated oven for 13–15 minutes, or until the edges and bottoms are golden brown.
  9. Cool and garnish: Allow the appetizers to cool slightly on the baking sheet. Garnish with fresh thyme leaves or chopped parsley if desired. Serve warm or at room temperature for best flavor.

Notes

  • For a milder version, use a sweet pepper jelly instead of hot pepper jelly.
  • Make sure the cream cheese and butter are softened to room temperature for easier mixing.
  • If dough is too sticky after chilling, lightly flour your hands before rolling.
  • These appetizers can be prepared a day ahead and reheated briefly before serving.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
