This Crockpot Salisbury Steak recipe features tender beef patties simmered in a rich mushroom and onion gravy, making a comforting and hearty meal perfect for easy weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Beef Patties

  • 2 lbs lean ground beef
  • ½ cup Italian style bread crumbs
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

For Cooking and Gravy

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (for frying)
  • 4 oz sliced mushrooms
  • 1 onion (sliced)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 ½ cups beef broth
  • 10.5 oz can cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 oz beefy onion soup mix

Instructions

  1. Prepare Vegetables: Place the sliced onions, mushrooms, and minced garlic into the bottom of the slow cooker to create a flavorful base for the patties.
  2. Make Patties: In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, Italian bread crumbs, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper until well combined. Form the mixture into 8 evenly sized patties.
  3. Brown Patties: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add olive oil. Brown the patties on each side for about 3 to 4 minutes until nicely caramelized, but not fully cooked. Transfer the browned patties to the slow cooker on top of the vegetables.
  4. Prepare Gravy: In a separate bowl, whisk together the beef broth, cream of mushroom soup, and beefy onion soup mix until smooth. Pour this mixture evenly over the patties in the slow cooker.
  5. Slow Cook: Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 4 to 5 hours, or until the beef is fully cooked through and tender, and the flavors have melded.
  6. Serve: Carefully spoon the rich mushroom and onion gravy over the Salisbury steak patties before serving. Enjoy this classic comforting dish with mashed potatoes or your favorite side.

Notes

  • Browning the patties before slow cooking adds great flavor but can be skipped to save time; the patties will still cook through in the crockpot.
  • For a thicker gravy, you can mix a tablespoon of cornstarch with cold water and stir it into the slow cooker during the last 30 minutes of cooking.
  • This recipe can be doubled for larger families and adjusted according to slow cooker size.
  • Leftovers store well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat gently on the stove or microwave.
