Ingredients

Scale

Apples and Filling

  • 10 to 11 cups sliced peeled tart apples
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, divided

Topping

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup quick-cooking oats
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup cold butter, cubed

Optional

  • Vanilla ice cream, for serving

Instructions

  1. Prep the apples: Peel and slice 10 to 11 cups of tart apples, then place them in a large bowl.
  2. Season the apples: Combine 1/2 cup sugar with 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon and sprinkle this cinnamon sugar evenly over the apples. Toss gently to coat all the slices. Transfer the apples to a greased 13×9-inch baking dish. (If pressed for time, you can skip peeling the apples; the peels will add some chew to the finished dish.)
  3. Make the topping: In a separate bowl, mix 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1 cup packed brown sugar, 1/2 cup quick-cooking oats, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg, and the remaining 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. Cut in 1/2 cup cold cubed butter using a pastry blender, two knives, or a food processor until the mixture forms coarse crumbs.
  4. Assemble: Sprinkle the crumbly topping evenly over the prepared apples in the baking dish.
  5. Bake: Place the baking dish in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) and bake for 50 to 60 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown.
  6. Serve: Remove from oven and serve the apple crisp warm. Optionally, add scoops of vanilla ice cream on top for a creamy contrast.

Notes

  • Using tart apples like Granny Smith provides the best balance of acidity and sweetness.
  • Cold butter is essential for a crumbly, crisp topping texture.
  • If you prefer a chewier texture, leave the apple skins on.
  • Try varying the spices by adding a pinch of cloves or ginger for a twist.
  • This dessert can be prepared a day ahead and reheated gently before serving.
