			For the Black Bean Patties
- 1 can (15 oz) black beans, drained and rinsed
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (plain or seasoned)
- 1/2 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp chili powder
- 1 large egg (or 1 tbsp flaxseed meal + 3 tbsp water for vegan option)
- 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tbsp oil for sautéing and frying
For Serving
- 4 burger buns
- Lettuce, tomato slices, avocado slices, cheese (optional toppings as desired)

- Prepare the Beans: Drain and rinse the black beans under cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess salt and canning liquid.
- Sauté Onions and Garlic: Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté for about 3 minutes until soft and translucent. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.
- Mash Beans and Mix Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, gently mash the black beans with a fork, leaving some chunks for texture. Add the sautéed onions and garlic to the beans.
- Add Binding and Seasonings: Stir in the breadcrumbs, egg (or flaxseed meal mixture for vegan), ground cumin, chili powder, chopped cilantro if using, salt, and pepper. Mix everything thoroughly until the mixture is well combined and holds together.
- Form Patties: Divide the mixture evenly and shape into four burger patties, compacting them so they hold their shape during cooking.
- Pan-Fry the Patties: Heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil in the skillet over medium-high heat. Cook each patty for 4 to 5 minutes per side until they develop a crispy golden-brown exterior.
- Assemble the Burgers: Place the cooked patties on the burger buns and add your favorite toppings such as lettuce, tomato, avocado, and cheese if desired. Serve immediately.

		Notes

- For a vegan version, replace the egg with a flaxseed egg made by mixing 1 tablespoon flaxseed meal with 3 tablespoons water and letting it sit for 5 minutes.
- You can use either plain or seasoned breadcrumbs; seasoned will add extra flavor.
- Make sure not to over-mash the beans to keep some texture in the patties.
- If mixture feels too wet, add more breadcrumbs to help bind it.
- Serve with your choice of sauces such as vegan mayo, ketchup, or mustard.
- These burgers can be refrigerated for up to 2 days or frozen for longer storage.
