Italian Pinwheels are a delicious and easy-to-make appetizer featuring a flavorful cream cheese and red pepper spread layered with provolone and salami, all rolled up in soft flour tortillas. Perfect for parties or snacks, these pinwheels offer a savory Italian twist with a mix of tangy peppers and Italian seasonings.

Ingredients

Scale

Spread Mixture

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup red pepper spread (like you would use as a sandwich spread)
  • ½ cup pepperoncini or banana peppers, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon coarse kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper

Assembly

  • 16 slices provolone cheese, thinly sliced
  • 16 slices salami or soppressata
  • 8 large flour tortillas (10 or 12 inch)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Spread Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, red pepper spread, chopped pepperoncini or banana peppers, dried Italian seasoning, coarse kosher salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and ground black pepper. Mash and mix everything together until well combined and smooth.
  2. Assemble the Pinwheels: Spread a heaping ½ cup of the cream cheese mixture evenly over each flour tortilla, spreading all the way to the edges. At one end of each tortilla, layer two slices of provolone cheese and two slices of salami or soppressata.
  3. Roll and Chill: Carefully roll each tortilla tightly from the end with the meat and cheese into a compact roll. Wrap each roll tightly in plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator. Chill for a minimum of 1 hour, or up to overnight, to allow the flavors to meld and to make slicing easier.
  4. Slice and Serve: Remove the wrapped rolls from the fridge and, using a serrated knife, cut each roll into 1-inch thick slices. Arrange the pinwheels on a serving platter for an attractive appetizer presentation.
  5. Enjoy and Share: Serve immediately or keep refrigerated until ready to serve. If you try this recipe, come back to share your feedback and star ratings.

Notes

  • Use softened cream cheese to make mixing easier.
  • Chilling the rolls is important to get clean slices when cutting.
  • You can substitute the salami with soppressata or any thinly sliced Italian deli meat.
  • For a spicier version, add more pepperoncini or use spicy salami.
  • Pinwheels can be made a day ahead and stored tightly wrapped in the refrigerator.
