This Philly Cheesesteak Meatloaf is a delicious fusion of two comfort food favorites—the classic meatloaf and the iconic Philly cheesesteak sandwich. Ground beef is mixed with flavorful ingredients, stuffed with sautéed peppers, onions, and provolone cheese, then baked to perfection. The result is a cheesy, savory, and satisfying dish perfect for family dinners or special occasions.

Ingredients

Scale

Meatloaf Mixture

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Veggies

  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Cheese

  • 8 slices provolone cheese (4 for filling, 4 for topping)

Garnish

  • Fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to get it ready for baking the meatloaf evenly throughout.
  2. Sauté Vegetables: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the diced green bell pepper and onion, then sauté for about 5 minutes until softened but not browned. Remove from heat and set aside to cool slightly.
  3. Mix Meatloaf Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently but thoroughly until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  4. Form Meatloaf Base: Press half of the meat mixture into the bottom of a loaf pan, shaping it evenly to cover the base.
  5. Add Cheese and Veggies: Layer 4 slices of provolone cheese over the meat base, then spread the sautéed peppers and onions evenly on top of the cheese layer.
  6. Top and Seal: Spread the remaining meat mixture over the veggies and cheese, pressing down to seal the edges and form a compact loaf.
  7. Bake Meatloaf: Place the loaf pan in the preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes. In the last 5 minutes of baking, add the remaining 4 slices of provolone cheese on top of the meatloaf and continue baking until the cheese melts and bubbles.
  8. Rest and Serve: Remove the meatloaf from the oven and let it rest for 5-10 minutes to allow juices to redistribute. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For a juicier meatloaf, avoid overmixing the beef mixture to keep it tender.
  • You can substitute provolone with mozzarella or cheddar if preferred.
  • Leftovers store well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and make great sandwiches.
  • To add a smoky flavor, consider adding a teaspoon of smoked paprika to the meat mixture.
  • If you want a gluten-free version, substitute breadcrumbs with gluten-free breadcrumbs or crushed oats.
