Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups (260 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp (6 g) baking soda
  • ½ tsp (3 g) baking powder
  • ½ tsp (3 g) salt
  • 1 ½ tsp (4.5 g) ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp (1.5 g) ground allspice
  • ½ tsp (1.5 g) ground nutmeg

Wet Ingredients

  • ¾ cup (150 g) granulated sugar
  • ½ cup (125 ml) vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¾ cup (210 g) apple butter
  • ½ cup (125 ml) buttermilk

Cream Cheese Frosting

  • ½ stick (56 g) butter, softened
  • ¾ cup (100 g) icing sugar
  • 4 oz (113 g) cold cream cheese
  • 3 tbsp (52 g) apple butter
  • Extra apple butter, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare Dry Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg until well combined. Set aside.
  2. Mix Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk the sugar, vegetable oil, and eggs until smooth and combined. Then whisk in the apple butter and buttermilk until the mixture is uniform.
  3. Combine Wet and Dry: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, whisking just until combined. Avoid overmixing to ensure a tender loaf.
  4. Prepare Baking Pan: Spray a 9x5x2.75-inch loaf pan with non-stick spray. Pour the batter into the pan and smooth the surface evenly.
  5. Bake the Loaf: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the loaf for 50 to 60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean and the top springs back when touched.
  6. Cool the Loaf: Remove the loaf from the oven and let the pan cool on a rack for 5 to 10 minutes. Run a knife around the edges, then invert the loaf onto a cooling rack. Allow it to cool completely before frosting.
  7. Make the Frosting: In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and icing sugar together until crumbly. Add cold cream cheese cut into cubes, then beat until creamy and smooth. Add the apple butter and beat until fully incorporated.
  8. Frost and Garnish: Spread the cream cheese frosting evenly over the cooled loaf. Spoon extra apple butter on top and swirl it decoratively into the frosting.
  9. Storage: Refrigerate the frosted loaf if keeping overnight to maintain freshness and texture. Serve chilled or at room temperature and enjoy!

Notes

  • Do not overmix the batter to prevent a dense loaf; mix just until combined.
  • Ensure the loaf is completely cool before frosting to avoid melting the cream cheese frosting.
  • If you don’t have buttermilk, you can substitute with milk mixed with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar, let it sit for 5 minutes before using.
  • For best results, use fresh spices to maximize flavor.
  • This loaf keeps well refrigerated for up to 3 days.
  • Serve slices warmed slightly or chilled based on preference.
